Materials:
- Cookies
- Price tags and play money

Math:
1. Uses real objects to add and subtract
- Retells the process used to solve problems
Speaking:
- Takes turns speaking and listening
- Makes meaning clear
Listening:
- Recalls details after listening to speaker
- Looks at speaker and remains silent while speaker is talking
Social Studies:
- Matches products in stores to the needs or wants they meet
- Recognizes that money has value because it can be used to purchase goods and services
Activity:
- Ask students who they get goods they want (money).
- Ask students how people get money (jobs). Ask students about jobs they know of.
- Explain that children will be paid for being students.
- Show students a one-dollar bill and a five-dollar bill. Explain the difference between the two bills. Explain that students will be paid five dollars.
- Tell students they will have a chance to buy cookies.
- Place some cookies on a table and have students pretend it is a store. Place a price tag in front of the goods and have children explain the importance of price tags.
- Give students different amounts of money. Give some kids enough money and give others an amount that is not enough to buy a cookie.
- Students purchase cookies if they have enough money.
Conclusion:
Have students explain why they could, or could not buy a cookie. Ask them to explain how much they need and what they need to do in order to get enough money for a cookie (work/make money). Have students pretend they have worked and give them enough to buy a cookie.
Follow-Up Activities:
- Set up a bank in your classroom. Pay students for being students on a daily basis.
- Provide opportunities for students to practice buying goods.
