Topic: Resources
Materials:
- Chocolate cookie recipe and ingredients
- Mixing bows, spoons and cooking utensils for baking cookies
- Drawing paper and crayons
Essential Academic Learnings/Objectives:
Math:
- Divides a whole into equal parts (halves and quarters)
- Uses vocabulary of approximation when estimating quantities and measurements
Writing:
- Draws pictures and tells the picture’s meaning
- Uses letters or letter-like forms to depict meaning
Listening:
- Recalls details after listening to speaker
- Follows two-part spoken directions
Social Studies:
Matches the products in stores to the needs or wants they meet
Activity:
- Explain that resources are things used to make other things. Ask students if they
would like to bake cookies. Have them explain the resources needed.
- Share a cookie recipe and display needed resources.
- In groups, students get a mixing bowl and spoon. In the center of the room, the
teacher has a mixing bowl and the ingredients (resources) used to make cookies.
- The teacher reads the recipe. Each time an ingredient is mentioned, the teacher
measures it out and puts the ingredient into each bowl. As more ingredients are
Used, ask students to recall resources used.
- Students take turns mixing and kneading the dough. Next they make dough balls
and place them on a cookie sheet. The cookies are placed into an oven and baked.
- In a whole-group activity, students recall what resources they used in order to make
cookies.
- Students work independently at their desks drawing pictures and writing about the
resources they used.
Conclusion:
Students share their writing and they eat the cookies.
Follow-Up Activities:
- Point to different things in the room and ask kids what resources were used to make
them.
- When kids make things in class, ask what resources were used.
