Activity:

  1. Tell students of a situation in which the teacher went to a store to buy an item and it
  2. was not there. Ask them to explain why the teacher could not get that item. Explain that too many people wanted it and it was sold out.

  3. Introduce the word scarcity, and explain that scarcity is when too many people want
  4. an item, but there are not enough resources to make enough for everyone.

  5. Set up a table with some goods displayed, for example, cookies. There are only
  6. enough cookies for half the students to buy one.

  7. Place a price tag in front of the cookies and give all of the students enough money
  8. to purchase one cookie.

  9. Kids line up to purchase goods. When the cookies run out, point out that there are still
  10. some people who did not get a cookie.

  11. Ask students to explain why there were some people who did not get to buy a cookie.

Conclusion:

Explain that not everyone got a cookie, because the teacher did not have enough resources at home to make enough cookies for everyone to have and when this happens it is called scarcity. Make sure all of the students get a cookie and enjoy.

Follow-Up Activities:

Set up mini-markets in which students are given the opportunity to buy and sell goods. When items are very popular and they sell out, have children explain why everyone could not get one.
