Materials:
- Book: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff
- White drawing paper
- Crayons

Reading:
- Recalls details from a story
- Retells a known story in sequence
- Responds to literature through art, drama and writing
Writing:
- Draws pictures and tells the picture’s meaning
- Dictates ideas, tells a story narrates an event
Speaking:
- Takes turns speaking and listening

- Speaks with enough volume to be heard by audience
Listening:
Looks at speaker and remains silent while speaker is listening
Social Studies:
Matches the products in stores to the needs or wants they meet
Activity:
- Ask students to name things that they want.
- Read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Stop throughout the story and ask students to state the different things the mouse wanted in the story. At the end of the story ask for student volunteers to retell and explain details about the story.
- Take out a piece of white paper and explain that students will draw a picture of something they want. Ask students to name things they want. Model drawing a picture of something the teacher wants on a piece of paper.
- Explain that students will go to their tables and draw a picture of something they want.
- Students return to tables and draw their pictures.
Conclusion:
Students meet in a circle and show their pictures and share what they want with others.
Follow-Up Activities:
- Continue to reinforce the concept of wants by asking students from time to time
things they might want.
- Students can share various wants with others during sharing, or show and tell time.
